U.S. 82 rock slide between Alamogordo and Cloudcroft caused the closure of the roadway late Wednesday evening until late Thursday afternoon.
U.S. 82 was temporarily closed between High Rolls and Alamogordo due to a rock slide just west of the tunnel requiring a Detour to N.M. 244 to U.S. 70. Reduce speed and drive cautiously on this reopened roadway.
Fresnal road remains open as the alternative route to light, single vehicle traffic ONLY No heavy trucks, trailers, RV's, etc.
High Rolls Mountain Park Elementary School was closed Thursday and students had to submit to remote learning due to the rock slide on Hwy 82.
The High Rolls Mountain Park school bus was unable to pick up the Chaparral and High School students.
In addition to the roadway being damaged and needing repair, a water line also was damaged, and the City of Alamogordo had to send work crews in to repair the line.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation sent crews in to assist with the boulder and rock removal.
This makes the second time this year that a significant rock slide has occurred on this US roadway connecting Alamogordo to Cloudcroft and beyond.
In January, a rock slide in this same area shut down U.S. 82 to Cloudcroft for days impacting business and tourism. Then, for a week in June, crews worked to remove potentially dangerous rocks and addressed further safety concerns in that area.
Recent rains may have been a factor. Earlier this year a geotechnical engineer did an assessment on the area following the prior slide.
At that time they reported, “Overall that area’s very stable. The rocks have been there thousands of years, maybe millions.”
It was reported at the time that the New Mexico Department of Transportation crews may do what’s called “rock scaling” on Highway 82, to remove loose rock. Other long-term projects could also come.
They reported at the time thatfuture projects more than likely will be some kind of concrete draping system, or what the NMDOT calls rock bolts, basically large nails that go into the face of the mountain to stabilize these huge boulders.
As evident last night. drivers should pay attention to warning signs and follow the speed limits, and of course remain cautious and vigilant when traveling this transit corridor between Alamogordo and Cloudcroft.
U.S 82 is back open and schools and school bus service will resume on Friday pending no further issues.
Did anyone see what Senator Charles Grassley is saying about AI yesterday. What does that have to do with this? It might explain why legal systems in many cities are such a mess.
But also: Why is no one talking about the DISMAL low income housing in Alamogordo, and the need to investigate what is going on in those places, and the lack of housing for homeless???????????
three responses:
"I cannot accept your canon that we are to judge Pope and King unlike other men, with a favorable presumption that they do no wrong. If there is any presumption, it is the other way against holders of power...power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely." ~ Lord Acton
Sunny, with a high of 66 and low of 42 degrees. Sunny in the morning, clear in the afternoon and evening,
It is interesting as you delve into the family, business and indeed religious connections that are intertwined in city politics. Some folks have a whole lit of fleas scratching the dog.
Absolutely true lots of fleas itching the dog!!
I somehow got logged out without doing so since last time I was here. I wanted to view the Flickinger meeting on Facebook but cannot because my account was taken down. I do not attend these public events because of all the attempts to mess with my life already.
two observations:
Absolutely. I would say those are conservative numbers at 1 in 40. The quickest way to become wealthy in America is to enter politics. I would say Miss McDonald is 1 in a 109. The family fun center fiasco is a true memorial to what nepotism and back room dealing will get you.
PBS was relevant.
NPR and PBS were definitely relevant - which is precisely why the trump regime has scuttled them...we have truly entered the era of alternative "truth".
Everything in Alamogordo feels fake to me, as if it is some kind of staging ground or network, not an organic community. Since the Manhattan Project, the military has used the town that way, but then there was a hard separation between the base and the town, and maybe that’s where things went sideways.
It looks like my comment was edited. The part about low income housing being crime infested was removed.
this is a situation which is replicated in countless small communities across our nation; where a single business/mine/factory/industry, or in this case, military base, is the economic engine that powers the entire community. this creates a nervous sort of dependency, and subservient approach within the local gover
