Monday 7-17-23 around 7 pm beginning in Tularosa then winding down the bypass and eventually down 10th Street around 8 pm, and to the police department building on Virginia, then onward to Scenic to the funeral home hundreds of sad and moved, bystanders gathered and watched the police procession for fallen Alamogordo Police Officer Anthony Ferguson stretched for miles and included hundreds of vehicles.
Several bystanders were led to tears as the cars with sirens ablaze kept coming and kept coming in memory of their fallen comrade.
Prior to the arrival of the 100s of vehicles from emergency responders people gathered along the streets; from 1oth and New York, down Virginia and beyond to Scenic Drive. The crowd gathered and was somber, but engaged. Many families, children and community officials gathered to remember and celebrate the life of fallen Alamogordo police Officer Anthony Ferguson.
As the lights flashed and sirens blared a somber silence fell upon the scene of hundreds gathered. Some were moved to tears, other awe at the sheer size and numbers of emergency response vehicles with lights and sirens blaring. Silent respect was the response.
The motor procession for an officer killed in the line of duty is at once both saddening and touching. Caused by tragedy, the procession and subsequent memorial give the community a chance to come together and share in the celebration of service as well as their grief over a lost service member.
Marked by a mesmerizing number of vehicles and a route lined by residents and their families showing their support, the procession gave us in Alamogordo the opportunity to grieve as a community and pay respect to service.
While each individual present grieved in a unique and particular way, the procession was the time residents came together, politics and division aside, to help remember and mourn with the law enforcement family of Alamogordo’s loss and show them the support and honors that are afforded someone who gives their life to service.
