Alamogordo Proud is a campaign launched organically by several local individuals concerned with the image portrayed of Alamogordo by the mainstream media.

The campaign is cosponsored by by the Independent News Association member AlamogordoTownNews.com and Alamogordo Community Radio KALHRadio.org 95.1 FM to highlight positivity in our community.

School aged children should have the opportunity to see live music or performance art. Exposure to the arts is a cornerstone to teaching an appreciation for diversity through music, art and theater.

AlamogordoTownNews.com has always advocated for a strong emphasis on the cultural arts community.

The arts offer a bastion of future employment opportunities and exposure to arts is a key component to a balanced education as is exposure to core academic activities and physical education.

Thus we are “Alamogordo Proud” that
this morning, the Flickinger Center for Performing Arts hosted local students with a San Diego-based group of musicians called LP and The Vinyl.

Questions from the student audience ranged from…

“Can you play a 100-year-old song”  which received a yes,  and they then played “On the Sunny Side of the Street” to…

“Do you know any African music” - yes again and finally…

a song request to the drummer

“Can you play Beethoven?” - and yes, he did.

These free performances to area school children are part of the Flickinger’s mission –to reach our local student population with live music, dance, and theater. With the help of generous area sponsors, the Flickinger pays groups extra to offer the matinee educational shows.

The next opportunity for students will be a group called Mads Tolling - a two-time Grammy Award Winner.

The show is on March 31 - call the Flickinger for information on scheduling your class or students.

Renowned jazz, blues, and gospel singer Leonard Patton partnered with the critically acclaimed Danny Green Trio to form LP And The Vinyl. The band’s vast influences include jazz, R&B, rock, the ’80s and ‘90s hits, Brazilian music, and classical music.

Students from area schools, private and home schools can attend free matinee education performances.

Today to a packed house, the group performed songs, demonstrated the difference between their various instruments, and took audience questions.

Music, theater and the arts that is the story of New York Avenue’s evolution into a cultural arts district and that truly represents the philosophy of “Alamogordo Proud.”
