Michael “Mike” John Furphy, 75, passed away on February 27, 2026, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He was born March 12, 1950, in Pueblo, Colorado to Jack and Marie (Novak) Furphy.
Mike was a resident in Alamogordo, graduating from Alamogordo High School in 1969, and going onto college at Las Vegas, NM on a football scholarship. He was a lifetime sports fanatic and was an avid golfer, scuba diver, and fisherman. He was passionate about all things automotive and started as an Auto Tech and then later transitioning into a Professor in Automotive Technologies at the University of Las Vegas from 2003-2011. After moving back to Alamogordo in 2011, Mike was instrumental in starting up the Automotive Technologies Program at NM State University and served as an instructor until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy “Dottie” Furphy; his siblings, Sue Brown, Kathy and (Rick) Allison, Chris, Theresa, and David. Mike is also survived by Kyle Cross, and many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Marie Furphy; his in-laws, Riley and Ruby Hardin; his stepchildren, James and Lana Fults.
There are no memorial or funeral services planned. The immediate family are planning a small celebration of life.
