Tularosa School District Strengthens Programs and Approves Bond for Growth

Board Approves $1.25M Bond Resolution While Maintaining Stable Tax Rates; New Initiatives Focus on Student Support and Engagement

The Tularosa School District is entering the 2026-27 school year with significant investments in staff, student support, and infrastructure, as the district board approved an amended bond resolution and several student opportunity programs during a recent meeting.

The board unanimously approved an amended resolution correcting the authorization amount for bond issuance to $1.25 million—up from an earlier figure of $1.225 million. The bonds will finance district projects while maintaining existing property tax rates, thanks to a modest increase in assessed valuations across the community.

Expansion Across All Campuses

The district has significantly expanded its workforce, onboarding new staff members across preschool through high school, including additional principals and support personnel. This expansion reflects the district's commitment to leadership development and enhanced educational services as enrollment continues to grow.

"Enrollment remains steady and strong," according to district reports, with 52 students in the preschool program and 161 at Tularosa Elementary School. The district is maintaining approximately 95% attendance, a key metric for funding and program stability that demonstrates strong community engagement.

New Behavioral Support Programs

In response to growing awareness of social-emotional learning needs, the district has introduced innovative behavioral support programs at the elementary school level. New CARE (Connecting and Recovery Environment) rooms and dedicated sensory spaces are designed to assist younger students in managing stress and behavioral challenges in a supportive setting.

"These interventions are critical to student success and reducing classroom disruptions," the district noted, highlighting a progressive approach to early childhood education that extends beyond traditional academics.

Athletics and School Culture

Fall sports programs are fully staffed with strong participation in football and volleyball across middle and high school levels. The programs underscore the district's commitment to extracurricular engagement, which research links to improved academic outcomes and overall student well-being.

At the middle school level, the launch of the Wildcat Claw Citizenship Program and structured house meetings is promoting positive citizenship, leadership, and teamwork among students. These initiatives aim to create a supportive school environment and foster meaningful student engagement.

Recognizing Student Achievement and Community Partnerships

The district is expanding student opportunities through multiple channels. Student artwork created for the "We Bond New Mexico" film project has been recognized, with potential for state and national exhibition opportunities. Additionally, the board approved a Hispanic Multicultural Grant for $6,000 to support Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO) extracurricular activities.

The district also authorized student travel to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, providing valuable leadership and professional development experiences for students involved in agricultural education programs.

Community Support and Financial Stewardship

The district acknowledged strong community support, including water donations for school events and successful grant awards that enhance educational programs. The board's careful financial planning, including the bond resolution that accommodates district growth without increasing local property tax rates, reflects responsible fiscal stewardship.

"This comprehensive approach—from academic programs and behavior supports to community engagement and fiscal responsibility—places the Tularosa School District in a strong position for continued success," district leadership stated.

The board set the date for the next regular meeting, with remote participation options available for members with scheduling conflicts. All agenda items were approved unanimously.
