Alamogordo City Commission Unanimously Backs Sunspot Observatory Preservation

“This resolution reflects our community’s recognition of Sunspot’s significance to our region and our state,” said Mayor Sharon McDonald, who requested that City Manager Robert Stockwell draft the measure of support. “The observatory is an integral element of Alamogordo and Otero County’s modern history, and we believe there are better paths forward.”

The unanimous passage came after sustained advocacy efforts, including a presentation to the commission by Dave Dooling and other Sunspot supporters in a prior meeting. Dooling and his allies also previously submitted a letter to city officials outlining the case for preservation, urging commissioners to take action.

The resolution emphasizes the potential economic benefits of redeveloping Sunspot for educational and scientific tourism purposes. According to the document, such development could “have a significant positive impact on the economies of Alamogordo, Cloudcroft, and Otero County.”

The City of Alamogordo has joined other stakeholders calling on state and national legislators to explore alternatives to demolition. The resolution positions Alamogordo as a willing partner in any future development of the historic facility, signaling local support for Sunspot’s transformation rather than its destruction.

The unanimous vote demonstrates the breadth of community support for preserving this landmark of scientific heritage.
