City of Alamogordo and Alamogordo MainStreet Invite Community to HAWK Launch Party August 8 - AlamogordoTownNews.org

Alamogordo, NM — Come out and celebrate a major step forward for pedestrian safety in downtown Alamogordo at the HAWK Launch Party on Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the intersection of E. 10th Street and New York Avenue.

The event, hosted by the City of Alamogordo and Alamogordo MainStreet, will mark the activation of the city’s first High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) signal — also known as a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB). This new traffic safety feature is designed to better protect pedestrians and visitors in the downtown area.

How the HAWK Signal Works

The HAWK system remains dark when not in use, allowing normal traffic flow. When a pedestrian pushes the button:

• Flashing yellow lights warn drivers.

• A steady yellow light follows.

• Then a solid red light requires vehicles to stop.

After the red phase, the lights flash red, allowing drivers to proceed with caution once the crossing is clear of pedestrians. When the lights go dark again and the intersection is clear, normal traffic resumes. This innovative beacon improves safety without unnecessary delays for vehicles.

For the launch party, New York Avenue will be closed from 9th Street to 10th Street, and 10th Street will be closed from Delaware Avenue to the vicinity of the crossing.

Family-Friendly Fun for All Ages

The afternoon and evening celebration will feature something for everyone:

Meet the Holly Hawk Mascot!

• Classic Car Show

Dunk Tank

Beer Garden

Food Trucks

Free Hot Dogs (first 300 guests)

The event is free and open to the public, making it a perfect opportunity for families, downtown visitors, and the entire community to gather, enjoy live entertainment, and see the new safety improvement in action.

This new pedestrian signal represents the City’s ongoing commitment to improving safety and vitality in the downtown district. Alamogordo MainStreet continues to work hand-in-hand with city officials to create welcoming public spaces that encourage foot traffic and community engagement.

Mark your calendar and join the celebration on Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 4–8 p.m. at E. 10th Street & New York Avenue. Bring the family, show off your ride, enjoy great food and drinks, and help welcome Alamogordo’s first HAWK pedestrian crossing!
