ALAMOGORDO, N.M. – March 17, 2026 – A well-placed source with direct knowledge of the incident has confirmed new details in the Holloman Air Force Base Shoppette shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon, March 17, 2026.

Around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the base was placed on lockdown following reports of an active shooter, according to a news release by Holloman AFB. The base is more than 10 miles southwest of Alamogordo.

Initial reports and eyewitness accounts indicated one person was shot and an apparent suicide attempt, now AlamogordoTownNews.org has confirmation of a second Individual injured. Emergency responders, including paramedics and a Native Air medevac helicopter, were dispatched to the scene. The 49th Wing Public Affairs Office initially described it only as “an incident has occurred” with no further official statements released by Holloman AFB, Otero County Sheriff’s Office, or Alamogordo Police Department at the time of initial reporting.

According to the now confirmed source, the female suspect followed her husband to the Shoppette. She attempted to present him with divorce papers, but he dismissed her. She then opened fire on him, shooting into the vehicle that was occupied by children. We have no reports of injuries to the children.

The woman then fled to the back of the Shoppette and attempted to take her own life. Authorities have confirmed her death at the scene. It is not confirmed if her death was via suicide or via authorities.

The husband was transported to a hospital in El Paso for treatment via Airvac.

No information further been released on the condition of any children who were alleged to have been in the vehicle, nor have the identities of those involved been made public. The investigation remains active and this is a developing and evolving story.
