Washington D.C. - ALAMOGORDO, NM –

The A.S.T.R.O. Vikings, FIRST Tech Challenge Team 23974 from the public Alamogordo High School, proudly represented New Mexico at the inaugural United States Governor’s Cup held February 20-21, 2026, at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C.

Competing against top teams from all 50 states in a high-stakes, March Madness-style robotics tournament, the Vikings demonstrated their engineering skills, strategic prowess, and commitment to STEM innovation. Though they did not advance to the playoffs, their participation in qualification matches highlighted their resilience and teamwork on a national stage.

Founded in 2022 amid the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, the A.S.T.R.O. Vikings emerged to revive and expand FIRST robotics programs in southern New Mexico, building on a foundation established in Alamogordo since 2016.

The pandemic had disrupted many after-school activities, limiting student access to STEM education, but the team’s formation marked a turning point. As a community-based group of Alamogordo High School students, they have since become advocates for robotics, mentoring younger teams like the A.S.T.R.O. Stones and hosting annual events at Alamogordo High School.

Their mission emphasizes inclusivity, focusing on underserved students by spreading FIRST opportunities through outreach, advocacy, and hands-on involvement.

Under the guidance of dedicated mentors, including Heather Kangas, and led by student members like Kaz Kangas—a long-time FIRST participant and Dean’s List Finalist—the team has achieved remarkable success. Kaz Kangas, who has been involved in FIRST programs including FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) for years, embodies the team’s spirit of perseverance and community impact. “Seeing these programs exist—and thrive—because of our team’s efforts is incredibly meaningful,” Kaz shared, reflecting on their role in fostering STEM growth. The Vikings have logged over 2,300 hours of community service, reaching more than 100,000 people through fairs, parades, STEM nights, and demonstrations at events like Spaceport America’s Open House.

Their efforts have earned back-to-back New Mexico FIRST Inspire Awards and contributed to launching 10 new FIRST teams, supporting 146 students from pre-K to 12th grade.

This community-driven ethos directly tied into their selection for the Governor’s Cup, where states nominate teams exemplifying excellence in robotics and outreach.

Adding to their preparation, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham visited the team prior to the competition, offering encouragement and highlighting the state’s investment in STEM education

The governor’s support, including a photo opportunity with the Vikings in their signature Viking hats alongside their robot and the New Mexico flag, boosted morale and underscored the importance of their work.

Assisted by Alamogordo Public Schools Communications Coordinator Michelle Birdeaux, who guided the students in drafting an invitation to the governor, the visit symbolized statewide pride in their achievements.

The Governor’s Cup, aligned with the National Governors Association Winter Meeting, celebrates STEM’s role in workforce development.

For Alamogordo, a community with strong military ties, the A.S.T.R.O. Vikings’ journey reinforces local innovation and inspires future generations.

As they return home, the team continues to advocate for expanded STEM access, proving that their impact extends far beyond the competition field and showing STEM education is active and alive in the traditional public high school.
