As the high school basketball season heats up across southern New Mexico, several local teams showcased resilience, scoring outbursts, and tournament grit over the past few days. From dominant performances at the Santa Fe Indian School Tournament to hard-fought battles in Lordsburg and Jal, here’s the latest from the courts.
Tularosa Wildcats Boys Continue Hot Streak at Santa Fe Indian School Tournament
The Tularosa Wildcats boys basketball team (12-2) powered through the Santa Fe Indian School Tournament with impressive victories, demonstrating depth and balanced scoring.
In their latest outings:
• Tularosa defeated Santa Fe Prep 67-43, led by River Kasero’s 14 points, with Joe Chavez and Eluciano Gonzales each adding 13, and Kameron Blazer contributing 10.
• The Wildcats followed up with a commanding 64-16 win over Cuba, paced again by Kasero (14 points), Kameron Blazer (13), Eluciano Gonzales (12), and Josiah Blazer (9).
Earlier in the tournament, Navajo Prep edged Tularosa 73-64, with Cameron Holguin leading the Wildcats’ effort (15 points), supported by Jacoby Apachito (13), River Kasero and Eluciano Gonzales (10 each), and Joe Chavez (8).
The Wildcats now stand at 12-2 and will host Estancia on Tuesday.
Cloudcroft Bears Boys Find Momentum in Lordsburg Tournament
The Cloudcroft Bears boys (5-8) showed improvement at the Lordsburg Tournament:
• They fell to Silver 61-35 but rebounded strongly with a 68-15 rout of Animas.
• Cloudcroft then secured a 46-37 victory over Silver JV to close out the event.
The Bears will played in the Consolation Championship on Saturday and host Gateway Christian on Tuesday.
Girls Basketball Highlights: Alamogordo Edges Portales in OT
In a thrilling contest, the Alamogordo Lady Tigers defeated Portales 61-59. Madi Flores and Addyson Gonzales each poured in 20 points, with Mariah Allen adding 13 crucial points. The victory improves Alamogordo to 6-8, and they will host Tularosa on Tuesday.
Tularosa Lady Cats Mixed Results at Santa Fe Tournament
The Tularosa girls (7-5) had ups and downs in Santa Fe:
• They defeated Cuba 44-36 to improve to 7-4 at one point.
• But fell to Cobre 49-33 in their latest matchup.
The Lady Cats will travel to Alamogordo on Tuesday.
Cloudcroft Lady Bears Battle at Jal Tournament
Cloudcroft’s girls team (5-9) faced tough competition in Jal:
• They defeated Midland Christian School 66-49, led by Maitlyn Barnett’s 21 points, Alyssa Singer (12), Marisa Romero (11), Delanie Dallas (8), Tristyn Housler (7), and Cassia Moore (6).
• However, losses to Jal (70-41) and Hobbs JV (57-31) followed, with Barnett and Housler leading in scoring efforts.
The Lady Bears next host Gateway Christian on Tuesday.
