In a release from the New Mexico State Police they announced the arrest of a juvenile for making school threats at Tucumcari High School.

On August 13, 2025, New Mexico State Police were alerted by Tucumcari High School administration about a 15-year-old student allegedly making repeated threats to plan and bring a firearm to school the following day.

Following the report of threats, officers worked with the 10th Judicial District Attorney’s Office and obtained a search warrant for the juvenile’s residence. After executing the search warrant with TPD and the Quay County Sheriff’s Office, officers located and seized multiple firearms and ammunition. The juvenile was taken into custody without incident and charged with Making a Shooting Threat under New Mexico law. He was transported to the Lea County Juvenile Detention Center in Lovington NM.

It was learned that from June 2025 to present, the Tucumcari Police Department (TPD) had responded to the juvenile’s residence over 70 times regarding multiple disturbance calls involving the juvenile. One of those calls included the juvenile being in possession of a stolen firearm.

Thanks to the swift actions of concerned students, school staff, and multiple law enforcement agencies, a potential tragedy was prevented.

The NMSP encourages all community members to continue to speak up if they see or hear something concerning.
