White Sands is located 15 miles west of Alamogordo and provides ample activities, amid a dream-like background of glistening white sand dunes stretching 275 square miles.

To get the most out of the adventure, begin at the White Sands National Park Visitor Center. Designed in Spanish pueblo-adobe architecture, the Visitor Center houses the White Sands National Monument Museum and is home to a wealth of information on White Sands, including the geology, history, and science of the area, as well as adventure packs, daily programs, and hiking information. In the Visitor Center, travelers can stock up on water and snacks, and even a Jr. Ranger activity book to inspire the youngest adventurers in your group.

For the active traveler, hiking White Sands National Monument provides unique opportunities to take in the sights. There are five established hiking trails varying in difficulty and scenery. For biking enthusiasts, bicycles are permitted on park roads only, and cycling offers a fun, active way to explore the beautiful scenery of the dunes.

A favorite pastime of kids and kids at heart is sledding down the snow-like dunes. Sleds and wax can be picked up at the visitors center and will provide hours of fun! Also, don’t forget to pack a picnic basket to enjoy a scenic lunch at one of the 62 classic shaded picnic tables. Finally, your visit would not be complete if you missed a White Sands sunset! Sunset is a great time to enjoy the beauty of White Sands while taking advantage of the cooler temps. On full moon nights, the Park is open until 11 pm in June, July & August!
