Real Major Flop: Democrats’ Grip on New Mexico By Gary Person

By Gary Person- The Democratic Party of New Mexico’s attack on Greg Cunningham and Speaker Mike Johnson offers plenty of insults but avoids discussing the conditions New Mexico families face every day.
New Mexico is not literally last in every positive category, but the truth is troubling enough. The 2026 KIDS COUNT Data Book ranks New Mexico 49th in overall child well-being and 50th in education. Census data show a median household income of $64,059, compared with $79,964 in neighboring Arizona. New Mexico’s poverty rate is 16.4%, versus 11.7% in Arizona, and its violent-crime rate is substantially higher.

Arizona is a fair comparison. New Mexico and Arizona became states only weeks apart in 1912 and share many geographic and regional challenges. Yet Arizona now performs better in household income, poverty, child well-being, and public safety.

It would be inaccurate to claim Democrats have controlled every part of New Mexico government uninterrupted for nearly 100 years. Republican governors have served, and Republicans briefly controlled the state House. Nevertheless, Democrats have dominated the Legislature for most of the period since 1930 and currently control the governor’s office and both legislative chambers.

After decades of influence over state spending and policy, Democrats should explain why New Mexico continues to struggle—not distract voters with name-calling.

Whether Mike Johnson spent 13 minutes or 13 hours in New Mexico does not explain why our schools remain last, why poverty remains so widespread, why Arizona households earn nearly $16,000 more annually, or why violent crime remains so high.

Greg Cunningham and Gabe Vasquez should both be judged on their records, qualifications, and plans for public safety, border security, education, healthcare, veterans, energy, and economic opportunity.

The real “major flop” is the gap between New Mexico’s enormous potential and the results its people receive. Before Democratic leaders attack another candidate, they should answer for the outcomes produced during their own long tenure in power.
