In Memory of Larry Dee Helms

Larry Dee Helms, lovingly known as "Papa," passed away peacefully on June 20, 2026, at the age of 78 in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Larry was born on March 5, 1948, in Carrizozo, New Mexico, to Eloise "Dolly" Coslett and Arthur Helms. He was later blessed with the guidance and support of his stepfather, Lee Phillip Onsrud.

Larry proudly served his country with honor in the United States Navy Seabees during the Vietnam War. His military service earned him the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with the 1960 Device, recognizing his faithful service and dedication to his country.

Following his military service, Larry continued serving his nation while working at White Sands Missile Range. He was also a skilled carpenter for Denco, where he dedicated more than 20 years before retiring. Though he took great pride in his work, at heart he was always a rancher and a cowboy. Raising cattle wasn't simply what he did, it was who he was. Whether working on the ranch, taking rides on his off-road vehicles, or enjoying the beauty of New Mexico, Larry found peace in the outdoors.

Anyone who knew Larry knew he started every day with a hot cup of coffee. Sunday mornings were often spent reading the comics before settling in with a good book or sharing stories with family and friends. He had a remarkable sense of humor and loved making people laugh through practical jokes, witty remarks, and unforgettable stories. One of Larry's greatest gifts was giving people nicknames. If Larry gave you one, you knew you had earned a special place in his heart.
Khaki was his favorite color, and it was rare to see him wearing anything else. Above all else, Larry cherished his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eloise "Dolly" Coslett and Arthur Helms; his stepfather, Lee Phillip Onsrud; his beloved son, Dwayne Helms; his brothers; and several nephews.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Suzanne Helms; his children, Travis Helms; Christopher Clark and wife Stephanie; Tina Aguilar and husband Marty; and Jason Clark and wife Lupe. His nephews and nieces; David Helms, Petie (Helms) Clary, Tammy Helms.

He was a proud grandfather to MacKanzie (daughter Lycette) and Fallon; Brandon, Dylan, Logan, and Brooklynn; Jeremy and wife Charity (children Keanen and Allison); Katrina and husband Tyler (children Weston and Oliver); Elisabeth; Anika and Tatiana. His family was his greatest pride, and the love he poured into each of them will continue through the generations that follow.

Larry lived with grit, humility, and an unwavering love for God, family, and country. He served honorably, worked hard, laughed often, and never met a stranger who didn't leave with a smile or a nickname. His stories, wisdom, laughter, and cowboy spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

A cowboy isn't measured by the miles he rides, but by the lives he touches. Larry's trail may have ended here, but his legacy will ride on through his family, his friends, and everyone fortunate enough to have known "Papa."

"You did good, Ole boy. You can rest now."
