It is with profound love and sorrow that the family of Luz Elena Carreño, 91, of Chihuahua, Chihuahua, announces her passing on May 31, 2026. A trailblazer in her own right, Luz Elena lived life entirely on her own terms, leaving behind a legacy of strength and unapologetic authenticity.
Born on June 22, 1934, to Carmen Carreño, Luz Elena learned the value of self-reliance early in life. She never waited for someone to open a door for her-she built her own. After moving to Alamogordo in early 1970’s, she started to work at Presto, which she loved and established a successful reputation for over forty years.
To her family, she was a fierce matriarch who championed independence in her children and grandchildren. She didn’t just teach her family how to take care of themselves; she modeled it daily. Known for her quick wit, her perfectly maintained garden, and her infamous rule- “A good cup of coffee and cheer determination can make anything happen”-Luz Elena proved that grace and grit go hand-in-hand.
She was an avid traveler, taking road trips with or without someone to accompany her till her last months, and an active volunteer at the Church, where she was a member of the Guadalupanas.
Luz Elena is survived by her two children, Ricardo and Yolanda; her eight fiercely independent grandchildren, and multiple grandchildren. Among the many milestones of her well-lived life, Luz Elena marked the year 1992 with immense pride.
She became a proud citizen of the United States, a feat that underscored her determination and tenacity. This achievement is but one example that highlights her ability to inspire others by overcoming challenges with fortitude.
We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the entire family, friends, and all who mourn Luz Elena’s departure. As per Luz Elena’s last wishes, on June 25, a rosary will be held at 10:00 AM, following a mass at 10:30 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church 705 Delaware Ave, Alamogordo, NM 88310. Following a procession to Immaculate Conception Cemetery 1354 E. 1st St. where she will be laid to rest.
As it ends we will hold space back at church for a repast. We invite all who knew and loved Luz Elena to join us honoring her memory.
Es con profundo amor y dolor que la familia de Luz Elena Carreño, 92 años de Chihuahua, Chihuahua, anuncia que falleció el 31 de mayo, 2026. Una pionera por derecho propio, Luz Elena vivió su vida entera en sus propios términos, dejando una legacía de fuerza y autenticidad. Nació el 22 de Junio, 1934, hija de Carmen Carreño, a muy temprana edad Luz Elena aprendió el valor de la autosuficiencia. Ella nunca esperaba a que alguien le abriera la puerta- ella construía su propia puerta. Después de moverse a Alamogordo en los 1970s, empezó a trabajar en la fábrica Presto, un lugar que ella quiso mucho y estableció una exitosa reputación por más de 40 años.
Para su familia ella fue una matriarca feroz que siempre abogaba por la independencia de sus hijos y nietos. No solo le enseñaba a la familia como cuidarse solos; pero siempre fue modelo de esas enseñanzas a diario. Fue conocida por su ingenio, y su jardín perfectamente mantenido, y su famosa regla "con un buen café y determinación puedes hacer que todo pase"- Luz Elena comprovo que la gracia y la firmeza van de la mano. Se le conocía como una persona que viajaba ávidamente, saliendo acompañada o sola hasta sus últimos meses, una voluntaria activa en la iglesia donde fue miembro del grupo las Guadalupanas.
La sobreviven su dos hijos, Ricardo y Yolanda; ocho ferozmente independientes nietos; y muchos bisnietos. En una vida muy bien vivida y todos sus logros, Luz Elena tiene muy marcado el año 1992 como su mejor orgullo. Fue cundo se hizo ciudadana de los Estados Unidos, un hallazgo que recalcaba su determinación y tenacidad. Esto es solo uno ejemplo de sus logros que muestran su habilidad para inspirar a otros de sobrepasar desafíos con fortaleza. Queremos extender nuestro más sentido pésame a toda la familia, amistades, y todos que sufren la pérdida de Luz Elena.
Como últimos deseos de Luz Elena, el 25 de Junio se llevara acabo un rosario a la 10:00am y siguiendo con una misa a las 10:30 en la iglesia Católica Inmaculada Concepción 705 Delaware Ave, Alamogordo, NM 88310. Después seguimos con una procesión al Cementerio Inmaculada Concepción 1354 E.
1st St dónde será su lugar de descanso. Al terminar regresamos a la iglesia para una convivencia. Invitamos a todos que conocían y quieran a Luz Elena que se unan con nosotros hacer honor a su memoria.
