A Visionary Path Forward: Transparency, Leadership, and Community Action in Alamogordo

By Kim, Great White Owl Murillo Founder & CEO, The Academy for The New Humanity

As Kim, Great White Owl Murillo, I stood before our City Council last night, guided by Divine Providence and a deep commitment to Alamogordo’s flourishing future. My return to this city after 44 years is driven by the conviction that we are at a pivotal moment, poised to build a 'new world' right here in the Tularosa Basin. My unique perspective as a Neo-Shaman, blending ancient wisdom with modern neuroscience, informs my Ph.D. work in Visionary Practice and Regenerative Leadership – a journey dedicated to translating vision into tangible community action.

Last night’s meeting, as accurately reported by 2nd Media Alamogordo, brought uncomfortable truths to light, underscoring the vital role of transparent, ethical leadership.

A Call for Integrity in Leadership: The City Manager Search

Your insightful reporting on the City Manager search has illuminated what many citizens feel: a process clouded by alleged "insider roadblocks" and "political interference." The impassioned public advocacy for Acting City Manager Dr. Stephanie J. Hernandez is not without cause. Her exemplary qualifications, proven leadership, and deep commitment to our city were evident even in the swift, compassionate opening of a shelter during our recent snowstorm.

When Commissioner Rardin's comments hinted at confidential leaks and the City Attorney warned against overstepping executive session boundaries, it confirmed a troubling resistance to transparency. As the "fourth pillar of our democracy," 2nd Media Alamogordo's role in seeking truth and fostering accountability is more vital than ever. The silence and deflection from some commissioners, as you highlighted, speak volumes. I reiterate my call to the Council: exercise true discernment. It is imperative that the Council swiftly and transparently move to confirm Dr. Hernandez as our permanent City Manager. Any Commissioner unable to prioritize the collective good over perceived self-interest should recuse themselves from this critical decision.

Building a Resilient Alamogordo: Beyond Politics

Beyond this immediate leadership imperative, Alamogordo faces real, tangible challenges that demand visionary leadership and immediate action. As Mother Earth evolves, bringing more frequent and intense weather events, our city's ability to adapt and protect all life becomes paramount. This isn't just about emergency response; it's about strategic planning for our fundamental city services.

We need consistent reliable trash pickup and robust systems to ensure our seniors are prepared for and protected during power outages and other emergencies. These are not abstract concerns; they are fundamental to the safety, dignity, and quality of life for every Alamogordo resident. A stable, competent, and permanent leader at the helm is essential to developing and executing these vital community adaptations.

My commitment to practical solutions is why I am already leading the Jail Ministry for Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, building a network of compassionate, faith-based volunteers. This initiative directly addresses restorative justice, empowering incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals to develop "basic citizenship competencies" and reintegrate as productive members of our community. Furthermore, I am initiating the Lover Lane Commons Project, aiming to create community-designed public spaces, starting with a collaboratively governed dog park to address overcrowding and foster civic engagement. These are tangible steps towards a more flourishing Alamogordo.

Alamogordo is ripe for positive transformation. I moved here with the intention to make it a better place. My sleeves are rolled up, and I am here to contribute my expertise, research, and passion to work collaboratively with those truly committed to our city’s highest good. I encourage all citizens to join the conversation, demand transparency, and engage actively in shaping our collective future.

Shalom.
