In Memory of Verna Hope (Murphey) Styck
In Loving Memory of Verna Hope (Murphey) Styck, born January 17, 1938, in Alvord, Texas passed peacefully in her sleep on October 20, 2025. Daughter of Flossie Beatrice Morgan Murphey and William C. Murphey, Verna grew up in California and graduated from Healdsburg High School in 1957.
Verna was a devoted mother to three sons, Patrick Kenneth McMillen, Curtis Lance McMillen, and Merle William (Bill) Styck. After moving to Las Vegas in 1966, Verna met and married the love of her life, Merwin Walter Styck. She endured the tragic loss of her eldest son and found solace in doll collecting and restoration, building a cherished collection of Shirley Temple, Madame Alexander, and many other dolls. She was a member of the Otero County doll club and served on the Board of Directors for many years.
Verna lived in Alamogordo for over 30 years where she was devoted to her local church. She worked as a food service professional at Alamogordo Public Schools for many years prior to becoming a Montessori school teacher at Karrousal Preschool & Child Care Center.
A thrifty spirit and nurturing soul, Verna loved caring for and educating children. She earned a National Administrator Credential and was honored by Alamogordo High School for her contributions to early childhood education.
In retirement, Verna remained active with Zumba, travel, caring for her doll collection, visiting family and attending reunions. She was the last of ten siblings and leaves behind a legacy of love and strength.
Verna is survived by her sons, Curtis McMillen and Merle "Bill" Styck; six grandchildren, Patrick (PJ) McMillen, Curtis McMillen Jr., Angela McMillen, Andria Layton, Briana Styck, and Jackson Styck; nine great grandchildren, Lillian, Lacey, Olivia, Madison, Ella, Cade, Lance, Oliver, and Isaiah.
Visitation will be held at Alamogordo Funeral Home on Monday, October 27, 2025, at 11:00 am followed by burial at Monte Vista Cemetery at 12:00 pm.
The Styck family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
