Sara Jacobs Chambers, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, artist, musician, and friend, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, surrounded by her family, after complications from pneumonia. She was 77 years old.
Sara is survived by her husband of 58 years, Joe; their children Jay, Will, and Sally; and her grandchildren Finn and Aaron. She also leaves behind her siblings Jessie, Patricia (Pat), and Thomas (Tom), along with many dear friends who were an important part of her life.
She was born in 1947 in Radford, VA to Patricia and Jesse Jacobs, an Air Force pilot. Life as a military family took them across the United States, to Japan, and to England during her childhood. The Air Force also brought her to the Alamogordo area, where she met her future husband, Joe Chambers. After an intervening year in California, Sara returned for college at New Mexico State University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree, master’s degrees, and teaching certification. Sara and Joe were married in 1967 while studying at NMSU and later settled in High Rolls, NM, where they raised three children in a home filled with love, faith, and music.
Her sense of adventure made her a tireless explorer of the planet, and its art. Sara delighted in immersing herself in local cultures around the world, visiting 30 countries and 42 states. In her forties, she discovered a deep love for painting, becoming an accomplished painter. Her artistic talent not only flourished but also inspired others. She shared her passion by organizing and hosting art classes and workshops, nurturing fellow artists from beginners to seasoned creators.
Sara’s creativity was matched only by her profound faith in God and devotion to her community. She spent many years leading music in church as an instrumentalist, singer, and on praise teams. She was dedicated to uplifting those around her, particularly as a founding member of The P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter BI, a philanthropic educational organization close to her heart.
Sara’s life was a living testament to the power of love, positivity, and service to others. Her favorite scripture, 1 Thessalonians 5:18, "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus,” reflected her steadfast faith. She was a constant source of encouragement, a comforting presence to anyone in need, and a reminder of the beauty of a life rooted in love and faith. She was always good for a hug.
A celebration of Sara’s life will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, May 30, 2025, at The Worship Center, 1100 N Florida Ave, Alamogordo, NM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the P.E.O. Sisterhood Scholarship Fund (information below) or a charity of choice. Sara’s legacy of love, creativity, and unwavering faith will continue to inspire and guide all who knew her.
