Ruby Alethea (Kitten) Haynes of Plano, Tx passed away on November 12, 2024. Alethea was born in her grandmother’s house in Tyler, Tx, to Ruby and Leroy Fortner. She graduated Tyler Hight School in 1943. Alethea attended church in Pine Springs where she accepted Christ as her savior at the age of 9. She followed His teachings throughout her life and shared her faith freely. She started each day with a prayer from Psalm 19:14. Alethea worked with the dental clinic in the POW camp near Tyler and later attended nursing school at Hillcrest Hospital in Waco, TX. She resigned from nursing school to marry her roommate’s brother. She and John Fletcher Haynes were married August 25, 1946. They moved to El Paso, TX, so John could complete his studies at the Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy (now UTEP}. After his graduation they lived in various mining camps and towns in six US states and four countries in Latin America. Their last home was in Tularosa, NM, where they moved to help their oldest son with his pistachio orchard. They had four children, twelve grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and two great, great grandchildren.
Alethea was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 68 years; her two eldest sons, John Fletcher Haynes, Jr., of El Paso, TX, and William Leroy Haynes of Alto, NM; her sister Marilyn Schwethelms of Comfort, TX; her brother James Fortner of Tyer, TX; grandson Robert Carpenter of Newark, Arkansas and great granddaughter Stephanie Ward of Livingston, TX. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Alethea Ann (Anita) and Thomas Sutherland of Plano, TX; son and daughter-in-law James Charles and Ruth Haynes of Tularosa, NM; sister Ann Metcalf of Panhandle, TX and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Alethea will be interred at the National Cemetery at Fort Bliss. The graveside services will be held on Monday, November 18, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.
