In Memory of Johnny H. Herrera, Jr.

Johnny H. Herrera, Jr., aged 53, passed away on September 29, 2024, in Mesilla, NM. Born on December 11, 1970, Johnny grew up in a close-knit family and attended Sacramento Elementary and Alamogordo High School. His early education laid a strong foundation for his later endeavors, including his honorable service in the US Army from 1989 to 1993, where he served during Desert Storm.

After his military service, Johnny dedicated himself to nurturing young minds and spirits as a mentor and coach, influencing many in softball and basketball. He was not only a veteran but also a cherished employee at Alamo Earthwork and Paving, where his responsibility and dedication were evident in his work.

Johnny was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He was known for his loving, caring, and outgoing personality with qualities that made him stand out in his community. He was a sports fanatic and a devout Raiders fan.

He leaves behind his mother, Alvina Locklear; children, Mikael (Kaytlin) Herrera, Aciana Herrera, Ayanna Herrera, Meyli Herrera, and Nakoa Perez; grandchildren, Jaelynn, Johnny, Josiah, and Janie; mother of his children, Selena Chino; siblings, Sonia Caldwell, Christine Martin, Lavitta Herrera, Eunice Herrera, and Tobias Herrera; and fiance, Nina Gonzales, along with her children, Adrian, Dominic, and Angelique. Also, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Johnny was preceded in death by his grandparents, Manuel and Elisa Herrera; father, John Herrera; and grandparents, Jose and Rafaela Martinez.

A Rosary was held held for Johnny on October 18, 2024, from 10:00 to 10:30 AM at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, followed by a Mass from 10:30 to 11:30 AM. A reception followed at St. Jude’s Church in San Patricio, NM. Johnny’s life and spirit will be celebrated and remembered by all who knew him.
