In Memory of Glen Wiley Markham

Glen Wiley Markham, 88, passed away June 3, 2024, in Alamogordo, NM. He was born in Noble, Oklahoma and was one of five sons born to Bradley and Gertie Bee (Whitaker) Markham.

Glen graduated high school in Dexter, NM in 1954 where he met his wife, Mary Ruth Hanson. They married on June 20, 1954 at First Baptist Church in Dexter. They moved to Las Cruces where Glen attended New Mexico A&M College (NMSU) where he was a star basketball player for the Aggies. He received his BS degree in science and physical education before moving to Maxwell, NM where he coached basketball and taught school for three years. From there he coached and taught in Clayton, NM for two years, then to Roswell, NM where he coached and taught at New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI). After being in Roswell for five years, he moved his family to Alamogordo, NM in 1969. He received his Masters degree from Western NMU and his Administrative degree from NMSU. While in Alamogordo he taught school, coached basketball and was the athletic director. Under his direction as athletic director he was instrumental in the design and building of the high school gyms, football and baseball complexes. He took on the role of Deputy Superintendent until he retired in 1995 after 36 years with New Mexico schools.

Glen was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Alamogordo and accepted Christ as his Savior when he was 13 years old. He enjoyed being at the family cabin in Timberon, hunting, reading western books and watching sports on TV.

Glen is survived by his wife Ruth married 16 days shy of 70 years, his three sons Douglas and Deanna of Brevard, NC, Stephen and Cindy of Sullivan, MO and Curtis and Barbara of Timberon, NM; seven grandchildren: Susan and Najam Haq of Aucland,NZ, Levi and Geraldine Markham of Leasburg,MO, Annamarie and Randy Waldon of Weed,NM, Daniel and Tammy Markham of Colmesneil, TX, Stevie Rae and Matt Helm of Leasburg, MO , Jessica and Shawn Stephens of Las Cruces NM, Hollie and Trent Chancellor of Midland, TX and 18 great-grandchildren. Also, his sister in laws Jean Markham of Prattville, AL, Elizabeth Myers of San Antonio, TX, Betty Markham of Portales, NM, and Cherrie Markham of Lake Jackson, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Clifton Eugene, Kenneth Roy, Leonard Neal and Orville Doyle.
