It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our brother, George Najera Gallegos, on the morning following his 72nd birthday peacefully at his sister's home on April 24, 2024. George was born April 23, 1952, in Alamogordo, N.M. to Josephine Najera Gallegos and Christopher LeRouge Gallegos.
George was a 1971 graduate of Alamogordo High school and furthered his education at NMSU-A and at Durham College in El Paso Texas, The University of California, Los Alamos branch, where he earned several degrees in Mechanical, Architectural, and Engineering Drafting. George began his working career at the Presto plant here in Alamogordo. Once he completed his studies, he worked for several energy & defense contractors as an Architectural/Mechanical/Engineering Draftsman, including: El Mac Corporation in Carlsbad, NM with the nuclear waste program, the Department of Defense and Research in Los Alamos, NM; The Department of Defense with the Navy at White Sands Missile Range. He worked at HAFB before retiring to work at Chaparral Middle School.
George was a gentle man with a big heart. He enjoyed music, loved to play guitar and piano, enjoyed getting together with his family to play music at our family gatherings. He was a skilled artist and painter, completing several pieces he left to the family. He also loved to hunt and fish, enjoyed time with his special companion, his dog Sammy, and numerous projects to keep him busy when he wasn’t playing pool somewhere in town.
George was preceded in death by his mother, Josephine N. Gallegos; father, Christopher L. Gallegos; brothers, Christopher N. Gallegos Jr., and Charles N. Gallegos. He leaves to mourn his passing, his siblings: Josephine G. Duran, Celina G. Brusuelas, Anthony N. Gallegos, Rosalie A. Gallegos, Gloria G. Montoya, Ralph N. Gallegos and several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, his godsons Joseph Romero and Charles Anthony Gallegos and others.
The family will hold a private service on May 19th at George’s residence. Memorial Services will be held at Immaculate Conception Church 705 Delaware Ave. on May 20, 2024: Visitation at 9:30am, Rosary at 10:30am, Guitar Mass at 11:00am, and Burial at ICC cemetery at 12:00pm. At 1 pm the family and friends of George will gather at the ICC Parish Hall for a potluck in George’s memory.
The family would like to thank the nurses at both Casa Arena and at GCMH Intensive care unit and his attending doctors, Dr. Gurmendi, Dr. Millward, and Dr. Dyer, and to the Ambercare Hospice staff, especially Angela Middleton, who cared for George and comforted the family.
George will be greatly missed by the family and memories of him will live forever in our hearts.
