In Memory of Martha Jean Bennett Coody

Martha Jean Bennett Coody passed away at home on April 23, 2024. She was born in Alamogordo, NM on March 10, 1942, to Wilson and Susie Mae Bennett.

Martha grew up in Alamogordo, NM and worked on the family ranches of Crow Flat. She was the first Otero County rodeo queen in 1958. After high school she attended Colorado State University until falling in love with her high school friend, Jim Coody. They married on December 22, 1962. She then received her bachelor’s degree from New Mexico State University.

She was a devoted wife and mother all of her life. Her family was her priority. Martha remained a devoted wife for 56 years until Jim’s passing in December 2019. They had 3 children Kathy, David and Jesse. While in New Mexico she was an active member of CowBelles and served as state officer.

In 2000, Martha and Jim relocated the Ranch to Barry, Texas. The ranch continued operations as the Heart X Ranch at Rush Creek where she achieved her dream of raising registered bulls.

Martha is preceded in death by her parents, Wilson and Susie Mae Bennett, her sister Betty Ayleene Stoots, her husband, Jim Coody and her son Jesse Coody.

She is survived by her daughter Kathy Coody, son David Coody and wife Christena, and daughter-in-law Lisa Coody; her grandchildren Susie and fiancé Doug, Paige and husband Travis, Doss, Jace, Stephanie and husband Mike, Megan and husband Patrick, and Kelsey and husband Kyle; her great grandchildren Brody, Jessie, Ryan, and Leighton.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024, from 4-5pm at the Lone Star Cowboy Church of Navarro County with a Celebration of Life service to begin at 5pm. A graveside service will be held in Alamogordo, New Mexico on Monday, April 29, 2024, at 3pm at the Monta Vista Cemetery.
