Marvin LeRoy Westphal, Jr. 78, passed away on March 20, 2024, in Lubbock, Texas. He was born July 14, 1945, in Greenfield, Iowa to Marvin Westphal, Sr. and Marie Bricker Westphal.
Marvin and Joanne were married September 24, 1988, at Grace United Methodist Church Chapel.
He was employed for 31 years at Holloman AFB at the #6585th Test Group and 846th Test Squadron until his retirement. He worked in the welding shop and was then promoted to the supervisor of the welding/sheet metal shops. Upon retirement he was employed as the welding instructor at NMSUA for several semesters.
Marvin was an avid bowler. He bowled in the Alamogordo Roadrunners Bowling Association for over 40 years and bowled in the Wednesday night men’s league for over 25 years. He also served as Past President of the Alamogordo Men’s Bowling Association. Marvin was a member of FOE #4101 and The American Legion. His football team was the Denver Bronco’s!!
Westphal Welding was established in 1984 working out of a small shop in Alamogordo. After marrying, the business moved to La Luz. He was so proud when he got his contractor’s license and always made it a point to tell his customers that he was a licensed welder. Marvin took exceptional pride in all his work, no matter if it was just one small job or many larger jobs. If his work didn’t meet his expectations, it didn’t go out of the shop! His nickname was “Marvelous”!
Survivors include his wife Joanne S. Westphal, two sisters Cecelia Cronk of Wilmington, DE., Annette Lana (Pat) of Lakewood CO., two brothers Chris Westphal (Donevy) of Casey, IA, Jeff Westphal (Kim) of Casey, IA.; four sons, Carlos (Laura) Westphal of Kent, WA., Paul Westphal of Scottsdale, AZ., Troy Thompson (Shawna) of La Luz, NM., Todd (Doris) Thompson of Gilbert, AZ.; daughter, Emma Westphal of Glendale, AZ. Marvin and Joanne have eleven grandchildren, Kyle Westphal, Kalina (Alex) Hall, Colin (Marina) Thompson, Tyler Thompson, Ashely Villarreal, Ariel Villarreal, Payton Thompson, Jace Thompson, Darian (Conrad) Collins, Ryleigh Murphy and Taylor Murphy and five great grandchildren, Dominic Westphal, Scott Hall, Octavia Hall, Leighton Collins and Sutton Salazar.
He was preceded in death by Father, Marvin LeRoy Westphal, Sr., Mother Marie Elizabeth Westphal, son Marvin LeRoy Westphal III, and Alicia Westphal, (former wife).
The Funeral Service will be conducted at 10:00am Thursday, April 4, 2024, at Grace Methodist Church 1206 Greenwood Lane, Alamogordo, NM with Pastor Kelly McCuaig officiating and will follow with a short reception.
Honorary Pallbearers include Carlos Westphal, Paul Westphal, Troy Thompson, Todd Thompson, Chris Westphal and Jeff Westphal.
In lieu of flowers should friends desire, contributions may be made to Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Alamogordo and/or Boys & Girls Club of Otero County.
The Westphal family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Scenic Chapel to direct the funeral services.
