ALAMOGORDO — With Halloween just around the corner, Geraldine Yazza Martinez, the Republican candidate for Otero County Sheriff, is reminding families to keep safety in mind as trick-or-treaters head out across the county.

In a message to the community, Martinez addressed "all the little goblins, ghouls, princesses, superheroes, and accompanying adults" who will be out knocking on doors and traveling through neighborhoods on Halloween night.

Her first piece of advice was aimed at parents: "Adults, supervise your kids." For older children going out without parents, she recommended the buddy system and carrying a flashlight.

Martinez urged trick-or-treaters to use sidewalks or paths and to cross only at corners and designated crosswalks. She also stressed making eye contact with drivers before stepping into the road, "that you know they see you."

For motorists, her message was to slow down and stay extra alert in residential areas. She asked drivers to put away cell phones, turn on their headlights, and use caution around driveways and alleys.

"As always, and most importantly, stay sober," Martinez said. "No drinking and driving."

She closed on a lighter note, telling kids not to eat too much candy — "at least not until your parents have had a chance to check it out first."

"We want everyone to have a fun, safe Halloween," she said.
