Alamogordo, N.M. — New Mexico State Police have released new details about Wednesday’s officer-involved shooting on Alamo Avenue that left a 50-year-old Alamogordo man dead.
According to State Police, dispatch received a 911 call at about 11:42 a.m. from a home at 1711 Alamo Avenue. The caller reported an armed man in crisis inside the residence, with three family members also in the home.
As Alamogordo police officers arrived, the three family members were able to leave the house safely and without injury. The man remained inside, and officers set up a perimeter around the home and made multiple attempts to communicate with him.
State Police say the man then ran out of the house carrying a rifle. Officers fired their weapons, striking him. He was taken to an area hospital, where he died.
Police have identified the man as 50-year-old Keith Cowgill of Alamogordo. No officers were injured.
Consistent with standard practice, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is handling the investigation. State Police say they will not be releasing the names of the officers involved.
If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available around the clock by calling or texting 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline or calling 911. This is an ongoing investigation and as more details are verified via the legal authorities an update will be made by Alamogordo Town News.
the proposed demolition of the sunspot observatory will be destructive to tourism that provides income and tax funding, both locally and statewide - unfortunately it is not in our hands to decide. to use an old english saying - closing bonito lake would be penny wise and pound foolish.
when i was a child - a long time ago - my family would camp and holiday in the ouachita/ozark national forests of western arkansas. i remember seeing these little signs in the small businesses - we like tourists because they're easier to pick than cotton.
Looks like a strike one for Stockwell. It's a good thing it not up to you. Taxpayer money went in to fixing the lake now your trying to block it's use. The state stocks the lake for our recreation. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?
