New Mexico State Police Ends Dangerous Multi-Agency Pursuit with Successful PIT Maneuver

Lea County — August 12, 2026 — New Mexico State Police (NMSP) assisted the Lea County Sheriff’s Office in bringing a high-speed pursuit to a safe conclusion after a driver engaged in a series of reckless and dangerous maneuvers that endangered both law enforcement and the public.

The Initial Stop Attempt

The incident began when Lea County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop a vehicle for driving recklessly through a school zone and nearly striking another vehicle. When signaled to pull over, the driver immediately fled the scene.

Escalating Danger

What followed was an escalating display of dangerous driving behavior. The fleeing driver traveled at speeds reaching approximately 105 miles per hour and at one point drove westbound in the eastbound lanes of Highway 82, creating an imminent collision hazard for oncoming traffic.

As the pursuit continued onto Highway 457, the driver’s erratic behavior intensified. The driver repeatedly left the roadway, executed multiple U-turns, and came dangerously close to striking oncoming vehicles. During an attempt by officers to deploy stop sticks, the driver allegedly maneuvered the vehicle directly toward a Lea County Sheriff’s deputy before swerving around him at the last moment.

Safe Resolution

An NMSP officer skillfully executed a Precision Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver, successfully disabling the vehicle and bringing the pursuit to an end. The driver was immediately taken into custody.

Arrest and Charges

The driver, identified as 25-year-old Christina Clayton, was arrested at the scene. Officers observed signs consistent with possible impairment. Clayton has been charged with:

• Speeding

• Reckless Driving

• Aggravated Assault Upon a Peace Officer with a Deadly Weapon

• Two counts of Aggravated Fleeing a Law Enforcement Officer

No Injuries Reported

Despite the dangerous nature of the pursuit and the high speeds involved, no officers or members of the public sustained injuries during the incident.

The New Mexico State Police commended the collaborative efforts of all agencies involved in safely concluding this high-risk situation and protecting the public during a volatile incident.
