ALAMOGORDO, N.M. — Mayor Sharon McDonald is calling on residents, businesses, and civic groups to join a city-wide cleanup effort at the Dudley Community Center on Saturday, July 18, beginning at 7 a.m.

The event follows a wave of community enthusiasm sparked by last Tuesday’s community forum, where residents and local leaders discussed ways to improve and beautify Alamogordo. Since then, momentum has continued to build, with volunteers and local companies stepping up to support the initiative.

“This is exactly the kind of community spirit that makes Alamogordo strong,” organizers said, encouraging residents of all ages to take part. City officials say the cleanup will focus on the areas in and around the Dudley Community Center, with tools, supplies, and coordination provided on-site for volunteers.

Local businesses have also thrown their support behind the effort. La Luz Dirt & Paving, represented by Casey Otero, issued the following statement:

“La Luz Dirt & Paving is proud to support Mayor Sharon McDonald and everyone involved in organizing the upcoming Dudley Community Center cleanup. Events like this demonstrate what can be accomplished when a community comes together with a shared purpose. We appreciate the leadership behind this effort and everyone who will be volunteering their time to make a positive impact. We look forward to working alongside the City of Alamogordo and Mayor McDonald on future projects that continue to strengthen and improve our community.”

Billed as “Dump Your Junk,” the event runs from 7 a.m. to noon, with headquarters set up at the Dudley Community Center and Park, 523 Maryland Avenue. Organizers say a free dumpster will be available in each district so residents can dispose of unwanted items, and free yard cleanup services will be offered to seniors, individuals with disabilities, and military members. Free document shredding will also be available at the headquarters location from 10 a.m. to noon.

In addition to the Dudley Community Center headquarters, dumpsters will be placed at several locations around the city, including:

• Indian Wells & Scenic

• 2201 Puerto Rico Avenue (Senior Center)

• 817 North Scenic (New Beginnings Church parking lot)

• Panorama Blvd (next to the Fairfield Inn)

• Walker Road (Baseball Park)

• Oregon School, 1500 Oregon Avenue

City leaders say the success of the cleanup depends on strong volunteer turnout, and they are urging residents, families, and local organizations to come out and lend a hand on the morning of July 18.
