Alamogordo, NM — A wonderful community moment unfolded this week at Kitty City NM when Kathy Denton was presented with a $400 Pay It 4ward award from Albuquerque’s KOB Channel 4.
The recognition was sparked by a grateful citizen’s call and nomination after Denton and the Kitty City team helped with her cats and her neighbor’s cats. KOB 4 reporters Trevor and Kai arrived unannounced to deliver the surprise check and certificate.
Alamogordo Mayor Sharon McDonald was present for the special presentation, adding to the local significance of the honor.
In a radio interview on KALH Radio with Anthony Lucero of Alamogordo Town News, Denton shared how the honor came as a complete shock. Her husband Ed had only told her she had a 2 o’clock appointment at Kitty City. “I’m like, what? I didn’t know what about any appointment… I said, okay, I’ll be there. I had no clue, I had no idea,” she recalled with laughter.

The photo above captures the joyful moment: Kathy Denton (center) proudly holding her official Pay It 4ward certificate, flanked by Trevor (left) and Kai (right) from the KOB 4 team. A resident cat watches from a high perch in the background.
Denton was especially touched that an Albuquerque news television station KOB recognized the work happening in Alamogordo. “I was very impressed that an Albuquerque station would consider us outside the city,” she said. “That was great.”
The $400 will go directly toward Kitty City’s biggest ongoing expense — recurring veterinary bills. Denton made sure to credit the entire team behind the rescue:
“It’s not just me and Ed, it’s all our volunteers. We have lots of great patrons — it’s a whole group of people that make this work.”
She also thanked the local community and KALH Radio listeners as welk as KOB who have supported Kitty City through previous coverage. Several people who attended the surprise presentation told her they first heard about the organization on the radio and via Alamogordo Town News and the weekly Kitty City segments showcased with Anthony Lucero.
This recognition shines a light on the important grassroots animal welfare work at Kitty City NM, a no-kill cat rescue and adoption center serving Otero County and beyond. Mayor McDonald’s presence underscores the city’s appreciation for local heroes making a difference for animals in our community and is an example of the #AlamogordoProud efforts in the local community.
Congratulations to Kathy, Ed, Mayor Sharon McDonald, and the entire Kitty City team on this well-deserved honor!
