At Otero Artspace now in its 3rd year, the Otero Veteran Arts Showcase Exhibition opens at 5pm Friday May 2nd, 2025 in Alamogordo's Cultural Arts and History District at 12th and 1118 Indiana.
For this years festivities an opening ceremony and the artwork of 28 artists ranging in age from 16 to 97. The Showcase Exhibition welcomes veteran artists as well as family members of veterans to submit work for the exhibit. This allows for a very diverse collection of artwork: sculpture, photography, painting, installations and papier-mâché
The Bailey family, Ron, SaraNell and Adam, are returning again this year along with Richard Varley, Chris Ward, Laurie Baker and Al Fairweather to name a few. Colette Shelley’s whimsical, colorful compositions are a new addition to this year’s event. The visitor will enjoy a wide variety of media, technique and themes during this year's showcase.
The schedule for May's Veterans Showcase is more than just art on display the monthlong events begin with the Opening Ceremony on Friday, May 2nd including a reception for Showcase Visual Artists 5-7 pm. The gallery is open Thursday through Sunday from 1-4pm through May.
A Writer’s Workshop will be held on Friday May 9th starting at 5:30. Pre- registration required. Call Dr. Arella 845-797-3642.
An Open Mic for writers and performers will be held on Friday May 16th starting at 5:30.
Friday, May 23rd from 2-5pm a Civilian/Veteran Dialogue will be held including music, readings and candid discourse on the Human Consequences of War.
A presentation of a Veteran Expressive Arts film will be held on Saturday May 24th from 2-5pm. The guest speaker: Everett Cox, is a Vietnam Veteran and a member of EXIT12 Dance group.
Footprints, a jazz ensemble, will return to Otero Artspace by popular demand to perform on Saturday May 24th at 7 pm. Tickets are $25. Military admitted free but must reserve in advance.
Veteran Arts Showcase Closing Ceremonies and a Community Drum Circle will occur on Sunday May 25th from 2-4pm.

I'm curious why this has not been sent to our Attorney General office, since they are the office responsible for enforcing open meeting laws. This happened in Las Cruces awhile back, and AG filed
a useful reminder that although good government is not cheap, bad government always costs more in the long run.

Agree about the importance of this current voting session. As an Independent I did consider it an opportunity not to be missed. I do believe my vote counts in NM, and I always vote my conscience, and I have some hopes for some of the close runoffs.
barela complained when senate bill 16 was passed - she was prescient - it would disturb the equilibrium in established party politics. and she was right - it tilted the republican vote out of her control. most excellent; democracy has once again raised it's ugly head....
and do not overlook the fact that republicans voted against senate bill 16 - it was filed by, supported by, and passed by democrats in our legislature - for the non-partisan purpose of protecting our democracy.
