This is a developing story and AlamogordoTownNews.com has reached out to Couy Griffin for comment. The Associated Press is reporting that Federal prosecutors have offered a confidential plea agreement to Cowboys for Trump founder Couy Griffin that might resolve misdemeanor criminal charges against him linked to the Jan. 6 siege on the U.S. Capitol, according to discussions at a Monday court hearing in Washington.

The Otero County District 2 Commissioner  still denies federal charges that he knowingly entering barricaded areas of the Capitol grounds with the intent of disrupting government as Congress considered the 2020 Electoral College results.

He commented as recently as this weekend  in an interview with the AlamogordoTownNews.com on the trespass charge...

Couy Griffin comment- "I am currently facing a misdemeanor trespass charge and one that I don't believe is fair or just. So, we will just see where that ball lands. I did nothing violent or anything that I have any conviction over that was wrong on Jan 6th. I simply stood alongside fellow Americans to protest what I believe were fraudulent elections. And did so under the guise that we were still a free country and still had a Constitutional Right to do so.

Video's surfaced earlier this year showing that Couy Griffin reached an outside terrace of the Capitol climbing a barricade but the Federal government has not proved that he entered the actual building.  Other video's surfaced that showed him with a bullhorn trying to lead a rambunctious crowd in prayer. He was arrested while in Washington to oppose President Joe Biden’s inauguration.

Griffin’s case inched toward trial in U.S. District Court in Washington as federal prosecutors have introduced vast troves on evidence about the Capitol siege from security cameras, police lapel recordings, witness testimony and social media posts.

The charges against Griffin carry a maximum prison sentence of one year and implications for Griffin’s future in public office rather as a commissioner or as a potential candidate for the law enforcement position of sheriff.

Griffin faces a petition drive to to recall him from office that has gathered approximately 1/3 or the needed signatures to date needed per the recall committee spokespersons most recent press release.  A probe by state prosecutors of allegations that Griffin used his public office in coordination with Cowboys for Trump for personal financial gain continues.

Legal battles continue with the Secretary of State of New Mexico and over the status of Cowboys for Trump, as to rather is was or is a legitimate business or a political action committee tasked with lobbying.

In a prior interview AlamogordoTownNews.com asked Mr. Griffin - What benefit did the association of Cowboys for Trump bring to Otero County?

Couy Griffin Response – “It helped me to build a relationship with the former President. By me starting and operating Cowboys for Trump it allowed me the opportunity to speak to him about issues directly affecting the great people of Otero County. You could view Cowboys for Trump as a type of "non-paid" lobbying group for Otero County that worked itself all the way into the Oval Office and gained direct attention from the President of the United States. That was an accomplishment. And all my reward has been an unjust and uncalled for recall election with my name smeared daily on social media and mainstream media. But the reward that I work for is not of this world but a world to come. And the only one that matters at the end of the day is God and praise be to Jesus God knows my heart and knows why I do what I do.”

Mr. Griffin told AlamogordoTownNews.com this weekend via an email that...

"Since entering office, I have done everything for the greater good and made huge sacrifices. After my first trip to Washington when Cowboys for Trump was founded and branded and all the guys, I rode with came back to families awaiting their arrivals at the airport I came back to divorce papers on my kitchen table.

I had to get completely out of the restaurant business because after the Alamogordo Daily News began their slanderous attacks my business was in the tank. I have given all my personal time, finances, and energy to this cause."

A plea bargain might take some of the pressure off of Mr. Griffin but he has yet to respond to our request for comments so far. Once we get them we will update the storyline.
